Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and The Home Depot to build Reading Garden at Gardena school
CARSON, Calif. (Monday, April 9, 2012) - The Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and The Home Depot announced today that Chapman Elementary School in Gardena, Calif., has been selected as the winner of the 2012 Reading Garden Challenge and will have a Reading Garden built on their campus.
The Reading Garden Challengecalled for schools and students (grades K-5) to focus on Earth Day by reading Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, as part of the NEA's Lorax Project Student Earth Day. The students were then challenged to create posters based on one of the following themes - Protecting the Environment, Keeping the Planet Green or Recycling. The top five schools with the most posters submitted reflecting the themes were entered into a random drawing conducted by the LA Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and The Home Depot to have a Reading Garden built at their school.
The Reading Garden will be built the week of April 23 with volunteers from the Galaxy, The Home Depot Center and The Home Depot. In addition, various activities will be conducted at the school with students as part of the Reading Garden preparations.
The Reading Garden is funded with proceeds from the 2011 How Suite It Is! fundraiser and additional contributions from the Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and The Home Depot. This year's How Suite It Is! will be held on Sunday, August 26 prior to the club's home game against FC Dallas. Funds raised from that event will help toward the creation of future Reading Gardens.
The Galaxy are back in action on Saturday, April 14 when they host the Portland Timbers at The Home Depot Center. That game, which is presented by Barry's Tickets, kicks off at 7:30 p.m. (PT) and tickets are on sale now starting at just $30.
