CHIVAS USA ANNOUNCES 2006 SEASON SCHEDULE
CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, February 8, 2006) - Chivas USA announced today its 2006 schedule for the 32-game Major League Soccer regular season. Five Chivas USA games, three of them in primetime, will be aired nationally on ESPN2, while Chivas USA will host the first of four 'Honda Super Clasicos' against intra-city rival the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, April 15. Five of Chivas USA's games will be shown live nationally on ESPN2, the first in Week 2 when the Red-and-White visit D.C. United on Saturday, April 8, in a rematch of last year's season opener. Three of Chivas USA's ESPN2 games will be shown in primetime, including two matches against the Los Angeles Galaxy (Saturday, April 15 at 8:00 p.m. PT and Thursday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m. PT, on the eve of the World Cup) and one against the newly baptized Houston 1836 (Saturday, August 26 at 8:00 p.m. PT). Chivas USA's first-ever visit to Houston will also be carried live on ESPN2 on Saturday, July 8.
Chivas USA opens and closes its second campaign in MLS at home against Real Salt Lake. The Red-and-White face their 2005 expansion brethren in Chivas USA's season opener on Sunday, April 2 at 4:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center, while hosting the Utah side in the last game of the 2006 MLS regular season on Sunday, October 15 at 4:00 p.m. PT. In between, the two teams will meet twice at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, on Tuesday, July 4 and Wednesday, July 26.
The Southland will pulse with the fervor of the U.S.'s only intra-city pro soccer rivalry when the 'Honda Super Clasico' between Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy makes its return for the second four-game series between the two clubs. Chivas USA hosts the first of the 'derbies' in Week 3 on Saturday, April 15 at 8:00 p.m. PT, while hosting the third in the series on Saturday, July 15 at 7:00 p.m. The Galaxy will host the 'Honda Super Clasico' on Thursday, June 8 and Saturday, September 30.
Bob Bradley, Chivas USA's new Head Coach and the winningest manager in the history of Major League Soccer, faces his former club, the MetroStars, in Week 4 of the 2006 MLS season when Chivas USA hosts the New Jersey side on Saturday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m. PT, before paying a visit to Giants Stadium three weeks later on Saturday, May 20. Chivas USA will also play two games against the Chicago Fire, which Bradley led to two U.S. Open Cups championship and one MLS Cup title, hosting the 'Men in Red' in Carson on Saturday, May 27 at 7:00 p.m. PT, before facing the Fire in their new 20,000-capacity stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois on Saturday, August 12.
In total, all 192 MLS regular season games will be played between Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, October 15. The team that fares best during those six and-a-half months will capture the MLS Supporter's Shield, while eight teams will qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. Each team will play four games against each of its five conference foes and two against each of its six non-conference opponents.
