SECOND DAY OF ACTION COMPLETE AT THE 2004/05 WORLD CUP OF CYCLING
CARSON, CA (December 11, 2004) - The ADT Event Center velodrome at The Home Depot Center in Carson today played host to the second day of competition in the second round of the 2004/05 UCI World Cup of Cycling series. More than 2,000 cycling/sports fans attended Saturday's session, the largest attendance figure since the ADT Event Center opened.
The World Cup of Cycling concludes with the final session scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday. The action kicks off at 10 a.m. and the final race - the Men's Team Sprint - is scheduled to take place from 1:45 - 1:55 p.m. to conclude the weekend's event.
Eric Heiden was a special guest at this weekend's event at The Home Depot Center. Heiden, who in 1980 at Lake Placid as a speed skater became the first Olympian to win five individual gold medals in a single Olympics, later turned to cycling. In 1985, the Madison, Wisconsin-born Heiden won the U.S. professional cycling championship, and later he competed in the Tour de France.
\"When I walked through the door this morning I was in awe of this facility,\" said Heiden of the ADT Event Center. \"I am very impressed. The Americans most definitely have a wonderful place to train.\"
As for this weekend's high-profile UCI event, he said: \"This event is great. These are the unique kind of events that expose people to our sport. It gets young kids interested and with a facility like this, and if you can keep the interest level high, I think that cycling in the U.S. does indeed have a strong future, especially when it comes to track racing.\"
