LA GALAXY HOST REAL SALT LAKE IN APRIL, INCLUDING BRITNIGHT CELEBRITY GAME: For the first time since losing to Real Salt Lake in the 2009 MLS Cup, the LA Galaxy will host the champs on Sat., April 17 at The Home Depot Center. The much anticipated rematch of last year's dramatic championship game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and close out the evening's festivities of BritNight, which returns for the third straight season, as part of BritWeek 2010. Prior to the Galaxy game, fans are invited to watch a celebrity soccer game at 5 p.m. featuring a host of British celebrities, including renowned chef Gordon Ramsay (Kitchen Nightmares / Hell's Kitchen on Fox) and actors Michael Sheen and Vinnie Jones. BritNight is one event of many that make up BritWeek 2010, a month-long celebration of British culture and influences to Los Angeles, Orange County and San Francisco. Two weeks after hosting Real Salt Lake, the Galaxy are back in action at The Home Depot Center to face the expansion club, Philadelphia Union, on Sat., May 1 at 7:30 p.m. Even though the Eastern Conference club is in its first year, their roster features four names familiar to Galaxy fans; defender Danny Califf, forward Alejandro Moreno, midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi and defender Shavar Thomas. CHIVAS USA HOSTS A PAIR OF HOME MATCHES IN APRIL: With the 2010 MLS season now underway, the Red-and-White look to a pair of home games during the month of April. First up is the Sat., April 10 match against the New York Red Bulls at 1:00 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a special edition Chivas USA t-shirt, and Kids Get in Free to the match (with the purchase of an adult ticket)! After the Red Bulls match, Chivas USA hits the road for its first match outside of The Home Depot Center this season, taking on the Houston Dynamo on Sat., April 17. The Red-and-White then return home to face the San Jose Earthquakes on Sat., April 24 at 7:30 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. Fans looking to come out to the games should look out for 5-game, 10-game, or full Season Seat ticket options, with prices starting as low as $10 per game. THE WEIGHT IS OVER: Boxing fans, the wait is over; world championship boxing returns to Carson next month, featuring Paul 'The Punisher' Williams in a 12-round super welterweight clash with Kermit 'The Killer' Cintron on Sat., May 8. Williams will fight over his weight, at 147 pounds, in HBO World Championship Boxing's headliner dubbed 'The Weight is Over,' presented by Goosen Tutor Productions, in association with DiBella Entertainment. Williams first fought at The Home Depot Center in 2006, where he stopped undefeated Walter Matthysse and decisioned Antonio Margarito in 2007 for the WBO Welterweight Title in his two previous efforts at The Home Depot Center. Tickets are available now for as low as $25, with VIP floor seats priced at $200. FROM BOXING TO WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: In June, the tennis stadium-turned-boxing ring will be once again transformed into a full-sized WNBA basketball court, when the Los Angeles Sparks host their first-ever outdoor match against the Seattle Storm on Sat., June 5 at 8:00 p.m. The 'Sunset Showdown' is part of the Sparks' 'Get Outside & Play LA' campaign, to promote health and wellness for the Los Angeles community. The June 5th game marks only the second outdoor WNBA game in the league's history. U.S. U-20 WNT and U.S. U-18 WNT IN Carson for Training Camps: Preparations for the 2010 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup kick into full gear in April as the U.S. Under-20 and Under-18 Women's National Teams will hold training camps concurrently at The Home Depot Center. The U-20s will train from April 11-18, while the U-18s will be in camp from April 10-17. U.S. U-20 head coach Jill Ellis is in the process of choosing a 21-player roster that will represent the USA at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Germany being held from July 13-Aug. 1 in four venues. All the players on the U-18 roster are eligible for the U-20 Women's World Cup Team, but the players in the U-20 training camp, which include the nation's top college-age players, will certainly form the core of the squad that heads to Germany this summer. >U.S. FINISHES SIXTH IN OVERALL MEDAL STANDINGS AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: After five days of competition at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Denmark, the United States finished tied with Canada for fourth in the gold medal standings, and sixth in the overall medal standings. Taylor Phinney, who trains at The Home Depot Center, won gold in the men's pursuit and a bronze in the Omnium, and Sarah Hammer, also a Carson-trainee, won the gold in the women's pursuit. The U.S. team recorded a fourth-place finish in the women's team pursuit and a ninth-place result in the men's Madison to highlight a successful campaign. In other cycling activity, the Canadian National Team Trials will take place from April 10-13, and local Omnium racing continues on April 24. The Home Depot Center Velodrome offers accelerated classes every Saturday at 2:00 p.m., which are one-day clinics for riders with at least three years experience at any form of cycling (road, mountain, bmx). Intro classes will begin on Sat., April 17 at noon, which are in-depth classes conducted over a four-week period and are for newer riders who seek one-on-one cycling instruction.
WORLD'S TOP TENNIS JUNIORS IN CARSON: Some of junior tennis' brightest stars of tomorrow, both nationally and internationally, have been competing in Carson this week at that sixth annual USTA International Spring Championships (ISC), and ITF Grade 1 tournament being held at the USTA Training Center-West at The Home Depot Center. Still in the hunt is top-seeded and World No. 28 Raymond Sarmiento from Fontana in the boys' 18s division. The USC-bound Sarmiento will be joined in the quarterfinals by future UCLA players Clay Thompson of Venice Beach and wild-card entry Daniel Kosakowski of Downey, both unseeded in the tournament. Singles and doubles action continues today for boys' 16s, 18s and girls' 16s and 18s, with the finals for all boys and girls 16s in singles and doubles and all 18s singles and doubles semifinals starting tomorrow - Saturday - at 10 a.m. On Sunday, the 18s singles and doubles finals will start at 10 a.m. A complete schedule of play, plus scores and draws, are available at www.usta.com/isc. All times are subject to change due to weather. Next weekend, the USTA will host a Hispanic Coaches Workshop as part of the USTA's expanding diversity initiative April 16 and 17. FOUNDATION OPENS REGISTRATION FOR MUSIC, MOVES & MORE, PLUS BATTLE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BANDS: Phase I is now open for the sixth Battle of the High School Marching Bands at The Home Depot Center, and will be accepting online applications through April 21, calling for high schools to mail in tape submission with one video and audio \"Southern Show Style\" band performance. After a one-year hiatus, the event returns to Carson, in which eight high school marching bands will battle it out on the stadium field on Sat., Nov. 20. Also online, students can register for the second annual Music, Movies & More Symposium, taking place on Tues., May 4 on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). In partnership with CSUDH and their 50th Anniversary celebration, the foundation will host the half-day symposium, composed of five educational sessions featuring professionals from the music and entertainment industry, including legendary music icon Chaka Khan, Power 106 and SUBELO! radio deejays and Pocos Pero Locos hosts E-Dub and Khool Aid, plus executives and writers from Music Connection Magazine.
