FIVE GAMES ON TAP FOR THE LA GALAXY IN APRIL: After earning four points in the month of March, the Galaxy will begin a busy April this Sat., April 2 at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Philadelphia Union. The match will be the first of two home games during the month for the club, with a three-game road trip added in between. The club will close out the month at The Home Depot Center on Sat., April 23 when they play host to the expansion Portland Timbers for the first time ever in a match presented by Children's Hospital Los Angeles. The match will kickoff at 8 p.m. and will feature a number of green initiatives in association with Earth Day (April 22). While the first team is on the road in the middle of the month, fans can still watch Galaxy soccer at The Home Depot Center with the Galaxy Academy playing a pair of games. The Galaxy U-16 and U-18 teams will be in action on April 10 and April 17, with games played at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Field #5 at The Home Depot Center. April will also see the return of youth camps to The Home Depot Center. LA Galaxy Soccer Camps welcomes players of all skill levels, from beginner to the elite athlete. The Junior Kickers half-day camps, for boys and girls ages 7-14, will be held from April 9-12. Full day camps, for 8-16-year-old boys and girls, will run from April 9-12. CHIVAS USA FACES CREW ON APRIL 9 AND REVOLUTION ON APRIL 30: With the 2011 MLS season underway, Chivas USA has a busy month of April on the schedule. The team will face the Columbus Crew on Sat., April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. After a two-match road swing that follows, the Red-and-White will host the New England Revolution at home on Sat., April 30 at 7:30 p.m. Single-game tickets are on sale, and fans can also take advantage of great rates for Season Seats and multi-game packs, all by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visiting cdchivasusa.com . BOXING RETURNS TO CARSON MAY 14: On Sat., May 14, Andre Ward will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight world title against European superstar Arthur Abraham to kick off the Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinals, presented by Goosen-Tutor Promotions, at The Home Depot Center. Also on the card is heavyweight Cristobal Arreola, who will fight Nagy Aguilera of the Dominican Republic. U.S. YOUTH NATIONAL TEAMS HIT THE HOME DEPOT CENTER IN APRIL: The Home Depot Center will be busy in April hosting two women's youth national teams as the U.S. The U.S. U-20s and U.S. U-17s will hold a concurrent training camp from April 23-30. Meanwhile, the full U.S. Women's National Team is prepping for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany with camps and events across the United States and the world. The World Cup starts on June 26, and runs through July 17, throughout nine German cities. The USA kicks off the tournament on June 28 against Korea DPR in Dresden. TEAM USA, LED BY SARAH HAMMER, EARNS THREE MEDALS AT CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE NETHERLANDS: Last week, Sarah Hammer notched two silver medals and one gold at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, becoming the first American woman ever to earn three medals in a single world championship. Hammer took gold in the women's 3,000-meter individual pursuit, earning her fourth world championship gold medal in her career, tying legendary American pursuiter Rebecca Twig. She also won the silver in the women's omnium and in the women's team pursuit, alongside teammates Jennie Reed and Dotsie Bausch. This week, Hammer was named USA Today's Olympic Athlete of the Week . USTA INTERNATIONAL SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND: The USTA Training Center-West at The Home Depot Center will play host to some of the top junior tennis players in the world April 2-10 at the USTA International Spring Championships. Participants include a number of top American juniors, including several players who train in Carson on a full-time basis; Dennis Mkrtchian from Glendale (16s); Alyssa Smith from Laguna Niguel (18s; she won the girl's 16s in 2010); Yuki Chang from Ojai (16s); and Elizabeth Profit from Long Beach (16s). Other top local players, who train at other locations include 14-year-olds Gabby Andrews from Pomona and Christina Makarova of San Diego, currently ranked 44th in the world, who reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. THE HOME DEPOT CENTER AND LA GALAXY HOST FIFTH ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT IN APRIL: The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and the LA Galaxy Foundation will host the fifth annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 21, for more than 300 kids ages 10 years and younger. Registration is full for the event, but media are welcome to attend. The event will feature an egg hunt, a visit from the Easter Bunny and LA Galaxy mascot Cozmo, plus Galaxy players and other activities and games. CARSON'S LEAPWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EARNS A READING GARDEN: Leapwood Avenue Elementary School in Carson won the 2011 Reading Garden Challenge, presented by The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and the LA Galaxy Foundation. The week of April 25, staff and players, in partnership with The Home Depot, will build an outdoor Reading Garden for the students at Leapwood. The Reading Garden Challenge invited elementary schools (grades K-5) from Carson, Compton, Gardena, Long Beach, Lomita, Lynwood, Torrance and Beach cities to participate in the 2011 Reading Garden Challenge, a joint initiative of the Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Chartable Foundation and The Home Depot. The Challenge called for students to focus on Earth Day (April 22) by reading Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and creating posters based on four environmentally-conscious themes from the book for the opportunity to have a Reading Garden built at their school.
