UCI TRACK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF CYCLING TO FEATURE TOP INTERNATIONAL RIDERS IN CARSON MARCH 24-27
PREMIER EVENT OF THE TRACK CYCLING WORLD COMES TO THE ADT EVENT CENTER VELODROME
MEDIA INVITED TO TAKE A RIDE ON THE VELODROME
CARSON, CA (February 9, 2005) - The ADT Event Center velodrome at The Home Depot Center in Carson is getting set to host this year's premier track-cycling event - the 2005 UCI Track World Championships from March 24-27.
Men and women from the United States and more than 40 other countries will be represented in Carson, and local cycling and sports enthusiasts will indeed be treated to a star-studded field of world-class athletes.
More than 200 cyclists will participate in 15 Championship events, six individual disciplines for men and women and three men's team events during the five days of racing as they battle for a gold medal and the right to wear the coveted rainbow jersey of World Champion.
\"Over the 118 years of World Championship racing most of the competition has been fought in Europe,\" said ADT Event Center velodrome Director Roger Young. \"Next month the battle will be in Los Angeles for the first time. The World Track Cycling Championships are arguably the oldest World Championship competition in sport. Boxing's world title has been around as long, but cycling's single event per year is as rich with history and drama, and from Major Taylor in the turn of the century to Jimmy Walthour in the 30s, Jack Heid in the 50s, to modern heroes like Mark Gorski, Connie Paraskevin-Young, and Mike Macarthy, the US has written a good deal of that history.\"
Individual tickets for the event go on sale February 19 through Ticketmaster starting at $15.50. All event packages are also available beginning at $75 and discounts for groups of 10 or more are also available. For more information or to order tickets, call 1-866-LAGROUP, order online at www.aegtickets.com or contact Ticketmaster. Tickets for the event will also be available at The Home Depot Center box office.
Leading the list of countries scheduled to compete is Australia, a nation that captured eight medals, including five gold, at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Other perennial powerhouses such as Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Japan, Russia and New Zealand will add to the Olympic-like atmosphere and further raise the level of competition and add depth to the field.
Media are invited to take a ride on the ADT Event Center velodrome, which is North America's only indoor velodrome. To schedule a special \"media ride,\" contact Lee Callans of AEG Communications by calling (310) 630-2095 or via email at lcallans@lakings.com <mailto:lcallans@lakings.com>.
