AEG & LA Galaxy officials and players unveiled the new Tifway Bermuda Grass multi-purpose sports field prior to kicking off a soccer clinic with former LA Galaxy All-Star Clint Mathis, and LA Galaxy's Josh Saunders, Sean Franklin & Bryan Jordan and 80 chi

Los Angeles, CA (September 19, 2012) - Two days prior to winning the 2011 MLS Cup Championship, the LA Galaxy and AEG announced they would donate a new multi-purpose sports field to Sunrise Elementary School, the 35,000 sq. ft. Natural grass field is also shared by Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA. On Tuesday, AEG & LA Galaxy officials and players unveiled the new Tifway Bermuda Grass multi-purpose sports field prior to kicking off a soccer clinic with former LA Galaxy All-Star Clint Mathis, and LA Galaxy's Josh Saunders, Sean Franklin & Bryan Jordan and 80 children from LA's Best after school program. Sunrise Elementary School is part of Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, a unique collaboration between the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Unified School District to turnaround LA's lowest performing schools.

The Weingart East LA YMCA currently teaches physical education on the field to more than 600 Sunrise and KIPP students on a weekly basis. The Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA will use the newly installed multi-purpose sports field for their after school soccer and football programs.

The 35,000 sq. foot Tifway Bermuda grass turf that was used for the field is the same grass that is specially grown for the LA Galaxy's field at The Home Depot Center. Shaun Ilten, The Home Depot Center's Turf and Grounds Manager drives out to West Coast Turf sod farm in the Coachella Valley each year to pick the healthiest turf that features the proper root zone specifications for the stadium's field. Meetings with the LA Galaxy and Pierre Landscaping and West Coast Turf determined that the sports field at Sunrise Elementary School would be created using the grass reserved for fields at The Home Depot Center and LA Galaxy training facilities.
